Art Songs
- Three Spanish Songs, for mezzo-soprano and string quartet: a setting of three poems by the composer, Spanish translations by Andrea Katz.
The work has also been orchestrated for mezzo-soprano and chamber orchestra comprising piccolo, flute, oboe, English horn, Bb clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, contrabassoon, 2 French horns, harp, and strings.
- Echo - a setting of the Christina Rossetti poem for mezzo-soprano and pianoforte. As this setting was commissioned by Cathy Harrop especially for performance at a pre-Raphelite concert and exhibition in New Zealand, the music is evocative of mid to late nineteenth century music.
- Ways of Light and Life - poetry by Martin Andrew. This song-cycle of five poems was commissioned by the Auckland Philharmonia (one of the works written while I was 1992 Composer in Residence). It is scored for baritone, Bb clarinet, French horn, violin, 2 violas, and violoncello.
- Butterfly - a setting of the D.H. Lawrence poem for mezzo-soprano and pianoforte. This is an early work, written when I was an undergraduate student at Auckland University.
